For years, Airbnb has been aware that some hosts have secretly installed hidden cameras to spy on guests, violating their most private and intimate moments. Despite acknowledging the problem in financial filings, Airbnb has taken steps to minimize public awareness through arbitration, confidential settlements, and employee nondisclosure agreements.

A CNN investigation found that the use of hidden cameras remains a significant problem in the industry. Regulations are limited, and those caught are often punished lightly, with video voyeurism typically charged as a misdemeanor.

An Airbnb spokesperson told CNN that while hidden camera complaints are rare, the company takes immediate and appropriate action when they occur, which can include removing offending hosts and listings.
