Travel agents are back

Millennials and Gen Zers in particular are fueling a travel boom - but they don't want to plan their own trips

Jun 17, 2024

Instead of booking online themselves, 38% of Gen Z and Millennial respondents said they would prefer to use a travel agent. The interest in having someone else plan a vacation is returning travel agents to their '90s glory.

Key takeaways

  • Flight delays and cancellations due to weather, staffing issues, technical problems and random bad luck are increasingly common. As a result, more travelers are turning to travel agents.
  • A 2023 survey of 2,000 American travelers found that 38% of Gen Z and Millennial respondents prefer traditional travel agents to online booking, compared to only 12% of Gen Xers and 2% of Boomers.
  • Travel agents are attracting young travelers through social media, appealing to their desire for unique and relaxing experiences. For as little as $100, or even free if the agent is working on commission, young travelers can have an expert manage all the details of their trip.
