Travel not among Google’s highest priorities

Travel is still an important vertical, but the company's key priorities are artificial intelligence, retail, and YouTube

Jul 31, 2023

Parent company Alphabet’s chief business officer, Philipp Schindler, told analysts last week that Google’s “three key priority areas” are Artificial Intelligence, retail, and YouTube. For retail, think fashion, electronics, and furniture, for example.

Key takeaways

  • The retail vertical led the 5% growth in that segment during the most recent quarter. Unlike the prior two quarters, travel was not mentioned as a growth driver;
  • In the previous two quarters, Google specifically cited retail and travel as driving revenue growth in Google’s “Advertising, Search and Other” segment;
  • There has been no indication that travel advertisers have been pulling back or that travel demand is diminishing. Google surely still makes a lot of money from travel advertisers.
